Squall line over northern Austria (25.07.2021)
Verfasst: Donnerstag 29. Juli 2021, 17:08
Greetings.
On this day, few severe storms were expected in SE Germany and in the northern parts of Austria. Good shearing and cape levels (2000 j/kg) supported also few organized supercells. Helicity levels were lacking a little in the lower parts of the surface and also some more inflow winds (easterly) near the ground were missing for "monster" cells.
I and my two buddies from Slovenia started around 11.00 a.m from Maribor and went over the Alps toward Wels area in upper Austria (Oberösterreich).
Near Eberstalzell we observed the incoming Squall line, but it wasnt organized.
Shelf cloud with some CG lighting managed to develop. The storm brought some pretty strong wind gusts near 100 km/h and small hail.
.
Enns (SE from Linz). Storm was rapidly aproaching.
We managed to core-punch the storm as it was very quick.
Near Neumarkt Ybbs a whole new thing developed, a photogenic HP supercell.
Radar image.
Soon it was game-over for this area (as the supercell went more toward NE and reaching the CZ-AU border), the only thing left we could do is to go north of Sankt Pölten. Staying ahead of the entire storm line and waiting for it.
Shelf cloud again developed. Quite cool.
Some CG lighting with a awesome location from the top of the small hill.
Then we ended the chase and went back toward Slovenia. Hope you like my report.
Kristijan.
